Weather at Erciyes changes markedly with the elevation you are heading to. The summit is typically 7-12 degrees colder than the base and windier. The forecast below is model data computed separately for each point and refreshed every half hour.

Read the wind by its gusts, not its average

Beside the wind reading in the panel there is a gust figure. What usually stops chairlifts is not the average speed but those sudden gusts. When the gap between the two is wide, expect intermittent operation during the day.

The second effect of wind is on perceived temperature. Minus five is comfortable on a still day and a genuine risk to exposed skin in strong wind. Reading temperature alone will not tell you what to expect up high.

Enclosed gondola cabins tolerate wind better than open chairlifts, so they are more likely to keep running on a gusty day.

Visibility: the variable the forecast hides

Temperature and wind come as numbers in a forecast; visibility does not. Yet on an overcast day, reading the terrain up high can become a bigger problem than the cold.

In overcast conditions the contrast between snow and sky disappears. In this flat light, bumps and hollows become invisible. Much of the upper mountain at Erciyes sits above the treeline, so there are no reference points either.

The weather description in the forecast — overcast, fog, snow showers — is the best available proxy for that risk. On such a day, losing elevation is the simplest and most effective response.

How far ahead is a forecast useful?

The first two or three days of a seven-day forecast are markedly more reliable. Days further out give you the trend rather than the values: "colder on Friday" is usually right, "minus eleven on Friday" is not.

In mountain terrain that uncertainty grows. The model represents the ground at a limited resolution, so valleys, ridges and local wind effects are not fully captured.

Practical approach: read trend for the far days and values for the near ones — and always check again before you travel.

Factor in the length of the day

The sunrise and sunset times in the panel set the ceiling on your day. In December and January daylight is short, and lift operating hours narrow accordingly.

By March and April the day is markedly longer. If you want more skiing for the same budget, that alone makes the second half of the season attractive.
