Erciyes Ski Resort

How the Erciyes ski season unfolds month by month

The season runs four to five months, and it is not the same mountain throughout. The months have distinctly different characters.

Short answer

The season at Erciyes typically opens in December and closes towards the end of April. Snow is most reliable in January and February, crowds peak during the mid-term school holiday, and the longest days come in March and April. Exact opening and closing dates vary year to year with the snow.

How the season builds

Cover always builds from the top down. When snow starts holding above 3,000 m at Erciyes, the base gates may still have nothing permanent. So in the first weeks it is the upper mountain that opens, not the whole of it.

Closing follows the same order in reverse: the lower elevations go first while skiing continues up high. The ski area reaching 3,346 m is what makes skiing into late April possible here.

The practical consequence is that at both ends of the season there is a big gap between "open" and "fully open". If you are going in early December or late April, check which lines are running before you commit.

The character of each month

The table below summarises how the months compare. The values are relative rather than absolute, and individual seasons can deviate.

The thing to notice is that no month comes first in every column. The most reliable month for snow is also the busiest; the quietest months have either the shortest days or the most variable conditions.

What matters more than the month: which day

For crowding, which day you pick matters more than which month. A Tuesday in February can be markedly quieter than a Saturday in December.

If your dates are flexible, look at weekdays first: the same budget buys shorter queues, emptier pistes and usually cheaper accommodation. The mid-term school holiday is the exception, when that gap closes.

Before you fix your dates

Opening and closing dates move with the snow and are settled only by the resort's own announcement. In the marginal periods — early December, late April — check that before you buy tickets or book a room.

The second checkpoint is the weather trend a few days before you travel. If a long mild spell is coming, conditions low down can change fast, and shifting the plan to the upper mountain is the sensible response.
