Erciyes Ski Resort

How to get to Erciyes

Erciyes's clearest advantage is how close it sits to a city. You can stay in Kayseri and go up the mountain for the day.

Short answer

Erciyes Ski Resort sits right beside Kayseri and is entered through four separate gates: Hacılar, Tekir, Hisarcık and Develi. Arriving by air means landing at Kayseri and continuing by road. Winter tyres are required in the winter months, and chains can be requested during heavy snowfall.

First decide which gate to head for

There is no single road to Erciyes; each of the four gates has its own approach, and typing "Erciyes" into a navigation app may not take you where you intended. Choose the gate before you set off and navigate to it by name.

The choice depends on what you plan to do. First time skiing: Hisarcık, which has the most complete learning area. Going up by gondola without skiing: Hacılar or Tekir. Avoiding crowds: Develi.

You can move between gates on skis during the day, but your car stays where you parked it. If you cross to the far side, make sure the return line is running.

Winter road conditions

The roads up the mountain are kept open through the winter, but conditions can change quickly on heavy snow days. Winter tyres are a legal requirement and chains can be requested during heavy falls.

Road conditions change noticeably as you gain elevation. Tarmac that is merely wet in the city can be iced above 2,000 m. That transition is often abrupt, and your pace needs to account for it.

If you want to catch the first lift, allow more than the nominal journey time. Snowfall lengthens both the drive and the time it takes to find a parking space.

Arriving by air

What sets Erciyes apart from many Turkish resorts is that it sits near an airport. Landing at Kayseri and being on the piste the same day is realistic.

In season there are shuttle options from both the airport and the city centre. Times shift with the season and demand, so take current information from the official source rather than trusting a schedule you found on an old page.

If you are hiring a car, confirm winter tyres when you book. Driving up without them is both a legal and a practical problem.

Stay in the city or on the mountain?

Staying on the mountain buys you the first lift and removes the drive entirely. On a snowy morning that can be worth more than an hour.

Staying in the city buys you choice and cost: the number of places to eat in the evening is in a different league, and rooms are usually cheaper. Kayseri's proximity makes this trade-off more meaningful here than at most Turkish resorts.

For a trip of several days you can combine the two — first night in town, ski days up the hill. The decision comes down to how early you are willing to get up.
