Short answer
Snow cover at Erciyes differs markedly between the summit and the base, because 1,258 m of vertical creates two separate snow regimes. The estimated depths below come from a weather model and are not measurements taken on the piste; check the official source for exact figures.
The three components of reading the cover
Judging a snowpack from a single number is misleading. The meaningful triple is: current estimated depth, snowfall total for the past seven days, and the temperature trend for the days ahead.
A moderate cover with fresh snow incoming improves quickly. A deep cover heading into a long mild spell is more fragile than it looks. The panel above puts these three side by side; make the call on all of them at once.
Why summit and base differ so much
The ski area runs from 2,088 m to 3,346 m. With roughly 0.6-1 degree of cooling per 100 m in dry air, that produces a typical difference of 7-12 degrees between the two ends.
For snow the consequence is direct: precipitation that turns to rain at the base falls as snow at the summit. The split is sharpest at the start and end of the season, when cover can be established up high while nothing holds below.
This is why the panel shows two points separately. Read the figure for the elevation you are heading to; an average represents neither.
Snow type matters as much as depth
The continental climate of central Anatolia keeps the snow at Erciyes light and dry. The same centimetre figure delivers a different day than it would on a maritime range: less resistance against the ski edge, higher speed, and easier drifting.
That character changes as the season goes on. Once a melt-freeze cycle sets in, the snow granulates and gets heavier. In March and April the first hours are hard and the middle of the day is soft; the day has to be built around that.
Where the definitive answer comes from
The figures on this page are model estimates. Real depth on the piste can differ noticeably because of grooming and snowmaking.
