Erciyes Ski Resort

Erciyes Ski Resort: what you need to know

One of Turkey's largest ski areas, right beside a city, with terrain reaching 3,346 m.

Short answer

Erciyes Ski Resort lies on the flanks of Mount Erciyes at Kayseri. It operates 41 pistes and 19 lifts, with terrain from 2,088 m to 3,346 m giving 1,258 m of vertical. It is entered through four gates, and the season typically runs from December to late April.

The scale of the resort

Erciyes is a large resort by Turkish standards. Its 41 pistes and 19 lifts run with an uphill capacity of 26,750 people per hour — enough that queueing stops being a daily concern.

The ski area spans 2,088 m to 3,346 m. That 1,258 m of vertical means both long descents and the ability to ski up high at either end of the season.

One point that is often confused: the summit of Mount Erciyes is 3,917 m, but the top of the ski area is the upper station of the Ottoman line at 3,346 m. They are not the same thing.

Four gates, one mountain

Erciyes is entered through the Hacılar, Tekir, Hisarcık and Develi gates. The pistes interconnect, but which gate you use decides your day: the gates differ in piste count, starting elevation and the lines they feed.

Hisarcık is the busiest with fifteen pistes and hosts the highest line. Hacılar starts from the lowest point of the ski area. Tekir is a junction. Develi stays comparatively quiet.

You can move between gates on skis, but your car stays where you parked it — the one constraint worth building into your day.

Snow and climate

Erciyes rises in the dry continental climate of central Anatolia. Air masses reaching maritime ranges carry plenty of moisture; by the time they get here most of it has already been dropped. The result is light, dry snow.

Elevation reinforces the effect. The whole ski area sits above 2,000 m, temperatures stay well below freezing for long stretches, and snow is preserved as it fell.

The season typically opens in December and closes towards late April. Cover peaks in February and early March; in April it retreats at lower elevations while holding up high.

Who Erciyes suits

For beginners, 36% of the network is blue, and the T-bar plus magic carpets at Hisarcık make it possible to practise without boarding a chairlift. The infrastructure for learning is complete.

For intermediates, this is where the resort's centre of gravity lies: a 42% red share opens up most of the mountain.

For advanced skiers, a 22% black share is high by Turkish standards, and the vertical available by chaining Divan into Ottoman gives one of the longest uninterrupted descents in the country.

For non-skiers, the two gondola lines provide a way up the mountain; the resort is not addressed to skiers alone.
