Getting to Erciyes: flights, roads and choosing a gate

Erciyes Canlı Yayın Kurulu · · Updated · 4 min read

One thing separates Erciyes from most Turkish ski areas: it sits directly beside a city with an airport. You can land at Kayseri and be on snow the same day, and you can base yourself in town rather than on the mountain if you prefer.

This article covers the practical side of getting there — arriving by air, driving up, winter road conditions, and the decision you need to make before you set off, which is which of the four gates to head for.

Decide on a gate before you leave

There is no single road to Erciyes. Each of the four gates — Hacılar, Tekir, Hisarcık and Develi — has its own approach, and typing the resort name into a navigation app may not take you where you intended. Choose the gate first and navigate to it by name.

The choice follows from what you plan to do that day. Learning to ski points to Hisarcık, which has the fullest learning area. Riding up as a foot passenger points to Hacılar or Tekir, the two gates with gondolas. Avoiding weekend crowds points to Develi.

You can move between gates on skis during the day, but your car stays where you parked it. That single constraint is the one thing to build into the plan.

Arriving by air

Kayseri has an airport, and the transfer to the mountain is short by the standards of Turkish ski travel. For international visitors this usually means a connection through Istanbul or Ankara.

In season there are shuttle options from both the airport and the city centre. Timetables shift with the season and demand, so take current information from the resort's official channels rather than trusting a schedule you found on an older page.

If you plan to hire a car, confirm winter tyres at the time of booking. Driving up without them is both a legal and a practical problem, and it is not something you want to discover at the rental desk.

Winter road conditions

The roads up the mountain are kept open through the winter, but conditions change quickly on heavy snow days. Winter tyres are a legal requirement in the winter months and chains can be requested during heavy falls.

Road surface changes noticeably with elevation. Tarmac that is merely wet in the city can be iced above 2,000 m, and that transition is often abrupt rather than gradual. Adjust your pace before you need to rather than after.

If you want to catch the first lift, allow more than the nominal journey time. Snowfall lengthens both the drive itself and the time it takes to find a parking space once you arrive.

  • Navigate to a specific gate, not to "Erciyes".
  • Winter tyres are a legal requirement; chains may be requested.
  • Road conditions change abruptly above 2,000 m.
  • Allow extra time on snowy mornings, for both driving and parking.
  • Your car stays at the gate where you parked it.

Staying in town or on the mountain

Because the resort is close to the city, both options are genuinely viable — which is unusual in Turkey. Staying on the mountain buys you the first lift and removes the drive entirely; on a snowy morning that can be worth more than an hour.

Staying in Kayseri buys you choice and cost. There are far more places to eat in the evening and accommodation is generally cheaper, which matters more the longer your trip is.

For a mixed group where not everyone skis, town is usually more workable. For a short trip where everyone is on snow all day, the mountain wins.

Parking and arrival timing

All four gates have car parks, and on weekends and holidays they fill early. Arriving late means parking further out and walking that distance twice, in ski boots, which are not designed for walking.

The second reason to arrive early has nothing to do with parking. The first hours of the day have the emptiest pistes and the best surface, freshly groomed overnight; by midday both have deteriorated.

Those two reasons compound. Arrival time is probably the single most consequential decision in a day trip to Erciyes.

The check to run before you leave

Snow on the ground does not mean the lifts are turning. Lines can be closed for wind, grooming or safety, and connecting routes between gates can close during the day.

That status is published only by the resort itself. This site does not report which lines are open, because relaying it second-hand means presenting stale information as current — and on a mountain, stale and wrong amount to the same thing.

Check the official lift status and the forecast for the elevation you intend to ski, then choose your gate. Those two checks take a minute and regularly save a wasted journey.
