Snow depth gets all the attention when a ski day is planned. In practice, the quality and the safety of that day are usually decided by two other variables: wind and visibility.
At Erciyes this is more true than at most resorts, because the upper part of the ski area approaches 3,300 m and much of it lies above the treeline on terrain fully exposed to wind.
The number on a thermometer is not the number your skin experiences. Wind continuously strips away the thin warmed layer of air at the surface of the skin, accelerating heat loss. The result is a far colder day at the same reading.
In practice: minus five degrees on a still day is comfortable, while the same temperature with strong wind poses a genuine risk to exposed skin. Face, ears and wrists are the most vulnerable.
This is why temperature and wind have to be read together. Temperature alone will not tell you what to expect at the top.
What stops lifts is usually not the average wind speed but sudden gusts. When the average looks acceptable while gusts are markedly higher, the chance of chairlifts being held increases.
That is why the conditions panel on this site shows gusts alongside the current wind. A wide gap between the two means you should expect intermittent operation during the day.
Enclosed gondola cabins tolerate wind better than open chairlifts, so on gusty days the gondola lines are the ones most likely to keep turning.
In overcast or foggy conditions the contrast between the snow surface and the sky disappears. In this "flat light", bumps and hollows become invisible; a skier cannot read the gradient ahead and loses balance without warning.
Much of the upper mountain at Erciyes sits above the treeline, which means there are no reference points. Lower down, among trees, the eye picks up depth information from surrounding objects; on open upper slopes that cue is absent.
Dry snow compounds it. Snow lifted off the ground by wind can cut visibility as effectively as snow falling from the sky, so visibility can be very poor on a day with no precipitation at all.
When visibility drops, the sound decision is to lose elevation. Lower pistes with reference points around them are markedly safer in these conditions.
Lens choice matters too. In low light, a lighter tint that raises contrast makes terrain far easier to read than a dark sun lens. Carrying more than one lens for the season is genuinely useful here.
And the simplest measure: do not ski alone. On a day with failing visibility, staying in a group within sight of each other is the most effective precaution there is.
On a cold, windy day exposed skin can be damaged without you noticing. The insidious part is that the process stops warning you as it progresses: first there is tingling and burning, then the area goes numb. Numbness feels like relief but is a sign of deterioration.
The most commonly affected areas are the cheeks, the tip of the nose, the ears and the fingertips. The cheek facing into the wind is markedly more at risk than the other one.
The practical precaution is simple: look at each other's faces during the day. A blanched patch is not something you notice on yourself, but someone facing you sees it immediately. When it appears, going inside to warm up is the quickest way to save the day.
The ski area tops out at 3,346 m. At that elevation the air holds less oxygen, and someone arriving from sea level will tire noticeably faster for the same effort. Fatigue is itself a risk factor, because tired skiers make slower decisions in exactly the conditions that demand fast ones.
Ultraviolet exposure rises with altitude too, and the snow surface reflects a large share of it back. Sunburn on an overcast day is a common and entirely avoidable outcome here. Eye protection is not optional either: prolonged unprotected exposure on snow at altitude can cause the painful condition known as snow blindness.
Keeping the first day light, drinking regularly and taking breaks are not cautious extras at this elevation — they are what makes the rest of the week possible.
No fixed threshold is published; the decision depends on the line, its exposure and the wind direction, and is made by the operator. Strong gusts generally matter more than average speed. Live status is published only by the resort.

Enclosed gondolas cope better than open chairlifts. At Erciyes that means the Lifos and Tekir gondola lines. The decision still rests with the operator, so check the official status.
