The four gates of Erciyes and which one to use

Erciyes Canlı Yayın Kurulu · · Updated · 3 min read

Erciyes is entered through four separate gates: Hacılar, Tekir, Hisarcık and Develi. Because the pistes interconnect, you can in theory reach the same mountain from any of them. In practice the gate you choose sets the tone for the entire day.

The differences come down to how many pistes each gate carries, what elevation it starts from, and which lifts run out of it. This article compares all four and sets out which one makes sense in which situation.

The four gates by the numbers

The table below is drawn from the official piste list. The per-gate totals add up exactly to the resort's 41 pistes, which is how this data was cross-checked against the published overall figure.

The thing worth noticing is that piste count alone does not settle it. Hisarcık is the busiest gate with fifteen runs, but it also hosts the highest line on the mountain. Develi carries fewer runs and offers a markedly quieter day in exchange.

If you are learning

What matters for a first-timer is having somewhere to practise without boarding a chairlift. Hisarcık covers that best: a 510 m T-bar plus two magic carpets, enough to fill your first two days without ever committing to a descent you cannot yet control.

Hacılar also has a carpet, and it starts from the lowest point of the ski area at 2,088 m, so the air there tends to be a degree or two milder. Being cold is one of the most common reasons a beginner's day ends early, and that small margin is worth having.

Tekir has a carpet too, and its gondola gives non-skiing members of your group a way up the mountain — useful if you are travelling as a mixed party.

If you are chasing vertical

Hisarcık is comfortably the most efficient base for anyone who wants descent. Divan climbs 663 m from 2,268 m to 2,931 m in a single 2,736 m stretch — the longest line at the resort. Ottoman then takes over and reaches 3,346 m.

Ride those two back to back and you cover 1,087 m of the mountain's 1,258 m total vertical in one sequence. There is no comparable chain anywhere else at Erciyes.

On the Hacılar side, Hitit reaches 2,939 m with 510 m of vertical and serves as that gate's workhorse. It suits skiers who want long descents without committing to the exposed top of the mountain.

If you want to avoid crowds

On busy weekends the Hisarcık and Tekir sides fill first, because that is where the most attractive lines are. Develi, with eleven pistes on the southern flank, stays comparatively quiet.

Develi connects to Tekir, so crossing over mid-day is practical. The one constraint is that your car stays at the gate where you parked, so check that the return line is running before you cross.

A useful rule: make your last crossing at least two hours before the lifts close. That leaves time to find an alternative if a connecting line stops unexpectedly.

  • Hisarcık: most pistes, most lifts, the highest line, the fullest learning area.
  • Hacılar: lowest base, longest gondola, foot access.
  • Tekir: the junction — connects to both Develi and Hisarcık.
  • Develi: quietest, southern aspect, good escape on busy weekends.
  • Your car stays where you parked; plan return crossings early.

If you are not skiing

Two lines are open to foot passengers: the Lifos gondola at Hacılar and the Tekir gondola. Both have enclosed cabins and need no ski equipment.

Lifos is the longest line on the mountain at 2,495 m and starts from the lowest point of the ski area, which makes it the more substantial ride of the two in both duration and views.

For a mixed group this matters more than it might sound. The difference between a non-skiing family member waiting in a car park and standing at the top of the mountain is the difference between two very different memories of the same trip.

Moving between gates during the day

The pistes connect Hacılar to Hisarcık, Hisarcık to Tekir, and Tekir to Develi. So you are not locked into the gate you started at, and on a longer visit exploring across the mountain is part of the appeal.

The planning constraint is the return. If a connecting line closes while you are on the far side, getting back to your car becomes a long detour. Confirm the return route is running before you commit.

Live lift status is published only by the resort itself. This site does not report open or closed lines, because relaying that second-hand means presenting stale information as current.

Frequently asked questions

How many gates does Erciyes have?

Four: Hacılar, Tekir, Hisarcık and Develi. Together they carry all 41 pistes, and the runs interconnect so you can move between gates on skis.

Which gate is best for beginners?

Hisarcık, which has a 510 m T-bar and two magic carpets. Hacılar is a good alternative and, starting at 2,088 m, is usually slightly milder.

Which gate has the highest lift?

Hisarcık. The Ottoman line runs from 2,922 m to 3,346 m and marks the top of the ski area. It is usually reached by riding Divan first.
